A Marriage of Styles, Pushing the Boundaries - An Introduction to Ars Subtilior Notation - Early Notation with Annette Bauer

For a brief moment in time, from ca. 1380-1420, a particularly complex musical style flourished in France and Italy in connection with the competing papal courts during the Great Schism (1378-1417). This extraordinary musical style was only later coined “ars subtilior” in the 20th century. A defining feature is the expansion of rhythmic possibilities by pushing the boundaries of the ars nova notation with inclusion of elements of the Italian trecento, using highly complex syncopations, different versions and rhythmic meanings of color, proportions, and even occasionally the pragmatic invention of new note shapes. This class will give an overview of the main sources containing “ars subtilior” compositions, and an introduction to some of the notation tools used by working on a few select pieces. Newcomers welcome with prior approval..
